Excellence - A Way of Life

How does a person develop excellence as a lifestyle? Why do some people seem to do just enough to get by, while others add “polish and shine” to all they do? Why do some people cut corners when others choose to “do it right”?

The definition of “normal” is largely and initially determined by the environment in which one is raised….whether the standard matched that of the general populous or not. Those early formative years form a lifetime of philosophy and reference material and form the doctrines of faith and practice. These defaults can be changed later in life, but it isn’t easy.

Excellence and quality are some of the defaults that have been handed down through the Amish/Mennonite heritage. Though not adopted by all, by and large, these communities are characterized for order, formality, quality, tradition, longevity, etc.

Even in the “Old World” (Europe, where the Mennonites originated), the excellence of trade was seen, and the Mennonites were welcomed by Catherine the Great to migrate to Russia where they prospered incredibly. Here in America, the Amish and Mennonite communities are full of small businesses, each honing their trade with enough persistence, commitment, and technique to stay afloat as a business.

The Amish have taken the furniture world by storm with their American made, heirloom furniture. These pieces are put together in such a way to stand up to normal and even harsh use in today’s modern home. Solid wood ensures the beauty will continue despite scratches and dents. The use of dove-tailed joints provides added strength. The finish on dining furniture repels moisture, leaving no lasting mark if wiped off within 24 hours.

These items are not mass-produced, but hand-made to reflect each customer’s personal tastes and needs. They become treasures to hand down to the next generation – heirlooms.

So how does one develop a life of excellence if not raised in that environment? First of all, it is a personal choice, regardless of background!

Secondly, surround yourself with those who exemplify excellence; this will inspire you to reflect the same in your surroundings and activity and attitudes toward others.

Thirdly, commit to the pursuit of excellence in all areas of life, not just one – even though for practicality sake you may need to start with only one or two spheres.

Fourthly, don’t give up; Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will the goal of excellence; it is a life-long habit/pursuit.
It starts with attitude, and reflects more and more in action…..but attitude is the most important!
